WHAT TO DO ...

Toothache

  • Flossing can help relieve mild toothaches.

  • A salt water rinse can be an effective first-line treatment as salt water is a natural disinfectant which can loosen food particles and debris that may be stuck in between the teeth.

    • Mix 1/2 teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water and use the solution as a mouthwash.

  • hydrogen peroxide rinse may also help relieve the pain. In addition to killing the bacteria, hydrogen peroxide can reduce plaque and heal bleeding gum.

    • Patients must dilute the hydrogen peroxide properly by mixing 3% hydrogen peroxide with equal parts of water and use the solution as a mouthwash.

    • Don't swallow the hydrogen peroxide solution.

  • A cold compress may relieve the pain that is caused by any type of trauma. A cold compress causes the blood vessels in the area to constrict. This helps pain less severe. The cold also reduces any inflammation and/or swelling.

  • Take an over-the-counter pain reliever such as Acetaminophen (Tylenol) and Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB).

  • Please give us a call at 949-873-5710 to schedule an emergency appointment with our dentist if the pain doesn't subside.

    • If the patient have a cavity, our dentists may be able to restore the tooth with a filling or a crown.

    • The sooner the patient acts, the less invasive his/her treatment.

Gum Abscess

  • Do NOT pop a gum abscess like how a pimple is popped.

  • Please give us a call at 949-873-5710 to schedule an emergency appointment with our dentist who can help safely drain the abscess.

  • Depending on the extent of infection, our dentist may then suggest the appropriate treatments:

    • Incise & Drain the abscess: The dentist will make a small cut into the abscess, allowing the pus to drain out, and then wash the area with salt water. â€‹

    • Root canal: This can help eliminate the infection and save the patient's tooth. The dentist will remove the diseased central tissue and drain the abscess. Then, the dentist will fill and seal the tooth's pulp chamber and root canals. The toothed may be capped with a crown to make it stronger.

    • Extraction: If the affected tooth can't be saved, the dentist will extract the tooth and drain the abscess to get rid of the infection.

    • Don't scrub the tooth

    • Don't dry the tooth

    • Don't wrap the tooth in cloth or tissue

    • Don't use soap or toothpaste

  • If possible, reposition the tooth in the socket â€‹immediately
